High School Academics

IBCK Educational Center provides a challenging academic program geared towards preparing high school students for higher learning. Students are also encouraged to pursue a career in the military or technical programs. IBCK Educational center offers incredible opportunities through technical programs, a dual enrollment program with Valencia Community College, Florida Virtual School, learning through community service, athletics, and arts. The unique academic program provided is designed to meet each student’s needs, individual abilities, and ambitions. 
Curriculum

IBCK Educational Center is a Christ-centered school. It is imperative that we focus on Biblical truths and implement them throughout every subject that is taught in the classrooms. The Bible provides a solid source of wisdom for every subject that is taught. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Therefore, parents, students, and staff must take the time to understand the importance of holding everything that is taught up to the light of Scripture. Psalm 119:130 says, “The revelation of Your words brings light and gives understanding to the inexperienced.”
ABEKA BOOK CURRICULUM

At IBCK Educational Center we utilize the Abeka Book curriculum to instruct our students from Kindergarten to Twelfth grade in conjunction with supplemental resources. We chose Abeka Book after doing extensive research due to their excellent reputation and high standards in scholastic material. Meeting the needs of our special needs population is very important to us. We utilize the A Beka Book Curriculum, hands on materials, visuals and other research based learning materials to enhance student learning and meet their learning goals. We also teach Life Skills as an alternative for our High School students unable to handle a rigorous academic curriculum.

 

FLORIDA VIRTUAL SCHOOL (FLVS)

In order to expand the elective academic options for our students and allow opportunities for credit recovery as well as early graduation, we have established an affiliation with Florida Virtual School. Non-scholarship, Step-Up and McKay Scholarship students are able to sign up for two courses annually at no additional cost to the parents/guardians.
 
Through FLVS students are able to work on their courses at school and home. FLVS is available all year long, allowing students the ability to complete credits during the summer months. All completed FLVS courses will be documented on the student transcripts. FLVS is available to students from Kindergarten to Twelfth grade. Only students in Middle and High school are allowed to work on courses during school time. Students MUST have parent/guardian consent in order to register for FLVS courses.
 
The following are the requirements for High School students.
  1. Florida Virtual School (FLVS) part time program’s courses shall be available to students before, during, or after the normal school day or during summer school enrollment. Students participating in the part time program must be enrolled in a full schedule in IBCK Educational Center. The student’s schedule may reflect the FLVS course the student is enrolled in. Students are only allowed to take two FLVS courses in a school year.
  2. Students requesting to take a course through the FLVS part time program must have parent and school advisor approval. Students and their families are strongly urged to consult with the school advisor and classroom teachers prior to applying to or enrolling in FLVS.
  3. IBCK Educational Center will accept all academic grades and credits attempted and/or earned at Florida Virtual School full time and through Florida Virtual School’s part time program.
  4. All credits earned through FLVS will be added to the student’s official transcripts, not in the school report card.
  5. Florida Virtual part-time enrollment does not grant a high school diploma.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
IBCK Educational Center currently offers students the opportunity to earn a standard diploma based on a 24-credit program. The following is a detailed explanation of the 24-credit program.

High school credits awarded before grade 9 will be counted toward the required credits for standard diploma. Any student that completes the 24 credits but does NOT meet the GPA requirements will earn a Certificate of Completion NOT a Standard Diploma.

GRADING AND GPA (Grade Point Average)

IBCK Educational Center uses a standard scale score to determine student’s GPA. All students GPA’s are un-weighted since it is the preferable method by most colleges.
 
At IBCK Educational Center, we believe in keeping parents/guardians well informed about their student(s) academic progress. All students’ grades are kept in an electronic format available for parents/guardians to access throughout the school year. In addition, parents/guardians will receive a report card at the end of each quarter to evaluate the student’s academic progress. A student’s grades may include: test scores, quiz scores, homework, notebook checks, projects, reports, and classroom participation.The grading system will look like the scale below.
 
IBCK Educational Center uses the following standard scale score to determine student's GPA.

ACADEMIC PROBATION

Students are required to maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or above throughout the school year. Any student that falls below a 2.0 cumulative GPA will be placed on academic probation and will be required to meet with the Principal including parent/guardian. The student will need to improve the GPA in order to be promoted or graduate at the end of the school year.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Students who enroll in and successfully complete 75 hours of non-paid voluntary community or school service work may earn one-half elective credit in Voluntary School/Community Service or one-half elective credit in Voluntary Public Service. A total of one credit may be earned through community service. The grade awarded is “pass” (P).
 
Students must complete a minimum of 75 hours of service in order to earn the one-half credit for either course. Credit may not be earned for service provided as a result of court action.
 
The school principal or designee is responsible for pre- approving specific volunteer activities before the student begins any community service project for high school elective credit. Community service for high school begins after confirmation of promotion to grade 9.
 
For high school credit and Bright Futures eligibility, volunteer/community service hours must be completed prior to graduation. Note: Please see Bright Futures website for the most updated information.

DUAL ENROLLMENT
In keeping with the school’s mission, IBCK Educational Center has formed a partnership with Valencia College in order to provide our High School Students the opportunity to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously.

SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS

Meeting the needs of our special needs population is very important to us. All students enrolled at IBCK Educational Center are given the opportunity to earn a standard high school diploma. Any student enrolled at IBCK Educational Center that is receiving the McKay scholarship or Gardiner scholarship and has an IEP requiring special education, may defer receipt of their standard diploma until the age of 22. In the event that a student is unable to complete the regular 24 credit-program, they may be eligible for a Certificate of Completion.
 
We utilize the A Beka Book, Pearson Curriculum, hands on materials, visuals and other research-based learning materials to enhance student learning and meet their learning goals. A variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the needs of individuals or student groups shall be utilized. In particular, varied instructional strategies, special communications equipment, or modification of methods of evaluation may be used to accommodate those students in exceptional student education. We also teach Life Skills as an alternative for our High School students unable to handle a rigorous academic curriculum.
